Winter 1976. A plane full of marijuana disappears over Yosemite. Months later, climbers find the wreck, raid the cargo and ignite a legend involving smugglers, federal agents, a mysterious black book and a death nobody can quite explain.

Press and reviews

From the press

San Francisco Chronicle
“An outrageously delicious story”

The story unfurls from there, by turns shocking and scary, bizarre and goofy. Overall, it’s an incredibly enjoyable and informative watch that adds to the well-stocked archive of recent, unforgettable Yosemite documentaries like “Valley Uprising,” “Free Solo” and “The Dark Wizard.”

“Spooky, weird, fun, and legitimately dangerous”

In a time when we’re all sorely in need of feel-good stories, the new documentary High Ground, the first full-length film about this storied incident, manages to deliver a dose of optimism.

From audiences

“I had heard bits and pieces of this story over the years, but I never really knew the whole story, and High Ground completely pulled me in. The original footage and photographs are incredible, but what I loved most was hearing from the people who were actually there. … It’s fascinating, funny, surprising and such a unique piece of Yosemite history. … I loved every minute of it and would absolutely recommend seeing High Ground on the big screen!”
Anne D
“We enjoyed learning about the players in this historic event. The climbers, the rangers, the DEA, and the pilots. The amount of original footage and photos was amazing! Thank you for making this the world premiere!”
PJ G
“The movie was very interesting. I loved how they developed all the characters in the story. It really kept your attention.”
Greg M
“They managed to create a fascinating documentary from legendary stories, from many viewpoints... and they captured the essence of Yosemite. Bravo.”
Tracy B
“Saw it last night and it did not disappoint!! It was fantastic.”
@oldtrails_doug
“Loved High Ground! I was lucky to see the screening at the San Diego Film Festival and thoroughly enjoyed it. Definitely recommend seeing the documentary when it comes to your town.”

A true Yosemite legend

In December 1976 a small plane carrying two pilots and several tonnes of Mexican marijuana lost height over Yosemite. It clipped the trees above Lower Merced Pass Lake, deep in the backcountry, and went through the ice. Rangers recovered what they could from the surface before winter drove them out. With the wreck frozen in, the site looked safe until spring.

They hadn't counted on Camp 4. The young climbers living on next to nothing beneath the valley's granite walls made dangerous treks through deep snow to reach the lake, then hid, moved and sold what they brought back. A search for a missing plane became a drug investigation, a public scandal and a piece of folklore nobody could control.

High Ground brings together the climbers, rangers, investigators and the pilots' families, many speaking on camera for the first time, to separate what happened from the legend Yosemite chose to remember.
